Barn med IBD - a digital support system for the most vulnerable
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Denmark has one of the world’s highest rates of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), affecting 53,000 people—more common than type 1 diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis.
Most diagnoses occur during adolescence, with 20% before age 18. An IBD diagnosis transforms life for both children and families.
Power Care
Working with health psychologist Mette Hald and medical specialists Dr. Vibeke Wewer and Dr. Katrine Carlsen from Hvidovre Hospital, we created “Power Care,” a comprehensive digital support system.
This innovative solution combines medical expertise with psychological support through user-friendly digital platforms designed for different age groups.
The ecosystem includes three integrated platforms
Child Power Care provides younger children with engaging, age-adapted interactive stories, animated medication guides, and games that make medical procedures less frightening. Young Power Care offers teenagers mobile-first practical self-management guides, advice on navigating social situations, and peer support networks focused on identity and independence with IBD. Parent Power Care equips parents with in-depth information about treatments, psychological guidance for handling children’s reactions, and tools for age-appropriate communication about the disease.
Impact
Results have been significant, showing improved hospital-home collaboration, better prepared medical consultations, and 24/7 access to validated support for families. Users report enhanced family dialogue about IBD and improved quality of life. Young patients particularly value feeling less isolated and appreciate practical advice about challenging topics like managing the disease during festivals or discussing difficult subjects like illness and sexuality, alcohol, and school problems.
Beyond Denmark and nomination!
The platform’s success has extended beyond Denmark, with Norwegian patients, parents, and doctors using it despite language differences, leading to current negotiations for a Norwegian version.
Furthermore the solution is nominated in the category “Digital Health” in Danish Digital Awards 2025, which we are especially proud of!
